The North Face

במיוחד כשהיצרן מציין במפורש שהוא מעניק Life time warranty על ה HyVent.

Cascade Designs

Hi,
My name is Guy Lichtenstern. I own a trekking gear rental service in Israel.
I recently acquired a MSR Autoflow filter and I have a few questions regarding the product before I start renting it out to my clients. I asked the online chat representative on backountry.com if the filter cartridge rubber enclosure could be opened to reveal the actual filter element. The reply was- "simply un-twist it". So I did, and I heard something break in there and now it wont close properly (when in use, water pressure pushes it open and water escapes).

We do not recommend twisting the outer rubber piece to access the internal filter.  The filter is the complete rubber unit and is sold separately as such.  I understand how one might assume this since there is a seam for production purposes but prying it apart most likely cracked the end cap off the internal cartridge.  Sorry that the retailer gave you incorrect information.  You are welcomed to send the complete filter cartridge to our distribution center in Ireland for a replacement.

 1. What did I do wrong?
I put some strong rubber bands around the enclosure to keep it closed (water stopped escaping) and performed a filter test- this turned out OK (couldn't get any air through the filter) and took it on a desert trip where it performed great for the first 5-7 liters but then turned much slower. When trying to back-flush, no water was flowing through at all, when applying light pressure on the dromedary bag, there were only a few drop going through. We did manage to purify around 15L to get us through the hike (We were filtering crystal clear cistern water).

Most likely what happened was that the cartridge ended up getting some trapped air within it.  This might have occurred due to the crack but can also happen during even normal back flushing.  To prevent air bubbles you’ll need to filter at least .5 L of water in the forward direction just before reversing the flow according to the back flushing procedures.  So you filter at least a .5 liter into your clean container then disconnect from the dirty bag and pick-up the clean to make the clean water  flow out via gravity in the opposite backwards direction.  If at some point it slows down or isn’t going fast enough then reverse the flow again in the regular forward direction to help purge air and retry.  Also, if you are using hard sided containers as a clean reservoir, try cracking the lid a bit since a vacuum within the hard sided container can cause the flow rate to be slow as well.  But the most important part is making sure the filter is wet immediately before back flushing.  I hope this makes sense!

 2. How come back-flushing did not work in the field?
Back home, tried back-flushing once again, and it took around 10 minutes(!) of the dromedary hanging high up on a tree until it went from 1 drop per second into a steady drizzle.
See above, perhaps this explains it.
 3. Is this normal? I don't expect to advise my clients to wait 10 minutes after every 8 Liters and waste another 0.5 for back-flushing.
4. Could you please explain the advantages of this system as opposed to using UV light + prefilter? (besides capacity).
The real advantage to using any filter over UV is that you will remove particles as well as biological threats.  If the water is clear in the first place then perhaps this isn’t that much of a concern. However, there still is a bit of what I call a “Yuk” factor in that you are still ingesting organism that might be inactivated using the UV procedure, whereas absolute removal via filtering can put clients more at ease.  Having said this though, seems to me you would end up taking much more time UV treating small containers of water at a time rather than filtering 8 liters at a time with our system.  Also, batteries can be expensive overtime. Lastly, if you were to treat water that has some particulate matter then this may prevent proper penetration by the UV which insures purification.  Certainly would need to use a prefilter of sorts as you pointed out which is yet another step.
Many of our clients are heading to Nepal where the water is usually clear.
 5. Is there a need to use carbon core filters such as the Miniworks or could the Autoflow suffice?
We’ve developed an inline carbon filter within our Platypus line of Gravity filters that you can splice directly inline to your Autoflow system.  The advantage of having the carbon is that it will aid in the removal of chemicals, tastes and odors.
 6. Is there any way of incorporating a carbon core filter element into the Autoflow system?
Thanks in advanced! Please keep on producing your excellent products 🙂
Regards,
Guy Lichtenstern

Hi Guy,

I think the best way to solve this (as you were incorrectly informed)  is if you forward me your postal address I will sent you a replacement autoflow filter cartridge from here.

Best regards

Tina
